Valldemossa
Valldemossa
is a picturesque village high up at 420m above sea level in the
Serra de Tramuntana mountains in the north west of Majorca.
Located just 18km north of Palma de Mallorca the village is famous
for its Monastry and the tragic tale of two lovers and their winter
in Majorca.
The view of Valldemossa as one approaches from the south with the
Royal Carthusian Monastry of Jesus of Nazereth at Valldemossa (Real
Cartuja de Valldemossa) purched up at the top of the valley with
its preety stone villas and cottages is splendid. There is a tourist
information office on the main road just after the entrance to the
monastry that offers information on the village including restaurant
ideas. Around the church there are a number of tree lined avenues
with pleasant restaurants, cafes a bakery, tobacconist and the odd
souvenir shop.
Frederic Chopin and George Sand in Valldemossa
It is a great Irony that the lovers George Sand and Frederic Chopin
should have chosen Valldemossa to escape the rumours of Paris. The
presence of Miss George Sand who wore trousers (would you believe)
with the famous composer Frederic Chopin suffering of Turburculosis
must have caused quite a stir with the old ladies and men. A tragic
and scandalouse love affair isolated for 4 months in the cold, wet
winter of 1838-39. "Heartless, selfish and impertent"
is how George Sand labeled the "barbarians" living on
"Monkey Island" in her book "Un Hiver à Majorque".
A tragic feud went on between the unmarried couple living in the
Christian monestary and the locals. Chopins health deteriated and
his Piano didnt arrive untill they were soon to depart.
Today it is George Sand and Frederic Chopin that help attract so
many visitors to the village. The locals are happy to sell her book,
to greet the visitors, serve them coffee and desert. After Palma
Cathedral the monestary is the second most visited place on the
Island. A sad but fascinating story of the past.
Valldemossa Geographical Location and Transport
Valldemossa is just 18kms north of Palma de Mallorca on the PM-111.
After the tiny s Engleieta (with its little bar) one soon enters
a tight rocky valley with a stream in winter. This eventually opens
out into a wide cultivated valley with luxuriouse villas and farms
dotted about. Valldemossa is up at the top where the valley swings
left to pass between the two mountains of Puig des Teix (1062m.
At the top of the short valley running to the north east of Valledemossa)
and the Mola de Son Pacs (595m) rising to the south west of Valldemossa.
The view of Valldemossa on this approach is the most stricking (see
Valldemossa photographs).
To the otherside of Valldemossa one joins the C-710 which goes
either north east towards preety Deia
or south west towards Banyalbufar. The route to the north east is
a excellent descent on a bicycle along the coastline towards Deia.
The views along here, at Deia and
and on towards the Port de
Soller are breathtaking (especially as the sun goes down).
Port de Valldemossa
Just after leaving Valldemossa heading south west towards Banyalbafur
there is a turn off about a kilometer or so after Valldemossa that
twists and turns for 6 kilometers to the Port de Valldemossa. This
was once an important connection to the outside world. The shingly
beach offers one possibility to bathe among the waves and a restaurant
is known for its excellent seafood. There are a number of other
place you can reach the sea near the Port de Valldemossa with perhaps
the best being the Cala de Deia near Deia.
