The Palma Soller Railway

After a good lunch at the vegetarian restaurant, Es Cantonet it was time to catch the 3.20 train from Palma to Soller. The journey is a mere 28 kilometers up and under the high Tramuntana mountains.

The Palma to Soller railway line was originally set up in 1911 to transport Oranges and Lemons from Soller To Palma de Mallorca. Today it is much faster to drive or take a coach but the old railway with its old fashioned train and splendid views over the plains, mountains and valleys is a great alternative. Ticket prices have gone up significatly since the introduction of the Euro but are still affordable at 4.30 Euros one way. 6.00 Euros return.

The train sets out cluncking along the streets of Palma on its 914mm narrow gauge rolling stock. Local people smile as they see you and the train passing by. Once Palmas ugly outskirts are behind you a wide plain opens out before you with the Serra de Tramuntana range in the ditance. You gradually approach the mountains with great views out across the orchards on the plain. In spring time the blossoms are amazing. Enjoy the views of my journey to Soller in November 2004 in our picture gallery.
