Soller
The
quaint little town of Soller (pronounced more like Soye) nestled
in a valley to the west of the the Serra Tramuntana mountains is
a peaceful, idylic spot where nothing very much happens and time
stands still. Leading down from the train
station one passes the Placa Espagna with its stationary tram and
tramstop where passengers board to take the short ride down to the
Port of Soller. This
leads on into the towns main square, Placa Constitucio with the
Church and Town Hall. Several pleasant Cafes line the square where
locals as well as visitors bathe in the sun sipping Coffee. There
is also the towns livliest bar here where people gather to watch
the football and play a game of pool.
Soller
has many pretty villas and lanes of terraced houses. Some of the
grander dwellings have well kept and colourul gardens that take
advantage of the warm climate. On the outskirts and as one climes
the surrounding hills stone walls rise up in steps with complex
irrigation channels that water the olive, lemon and lime terraces
of Soller. These continue a considerable way almost to the top of
the mountains overlooking the town.
Of particular interest are the preety
Botanic Gardens of Soller and Balearic Museum of Natural Sciences
a short walk from the town hall. Soller is a real Mallorcan town
where the old men meet in a cafe for a game of cards of an afternoon.
Its people are friendly and the atmosphere and climate warm.
Soller is also within walking distance of the villages of Biniaraix
and Fornalutx to the east; some of the most picturesque in Majorca.
It is an excellent gateway to the best hiking (the Cornadores Circuit)
and cycling region of Majorca.
To the west is the famous village of Deia,
where some of the best swimming (on shingle beaches) in the region
can be found, and further on Valldemossa
with its monestary. Also in Sollers proximity (to the south) are
the beautiful gardens of Alfabia.

Walk from Soller up the Serra d Alfabia
An
intersting if challenging walk can be made from Sollers main square
up the main mountain to the south (Serra d Alfabia 1062m). Take
the road leading down the left hand side of the church and then
take a left down Santa Barbara. Look out for the sign for the cemetary.
Just after the cemetary there is a fork in the road where a stream
passes down. Take neither road. Hidden between them both there is
a path with steps leading straight up the mountain. The path is
steap running between the terraced fields to either side and is
laid with stone. Any other route will lead to a dead end or private
property sign. Keep going straight up the path. There is a point
at which the path splits into three marked by a pile of rocks. The
route to the left across the field takes you onwards towards the
top. Excellent views back across the valley towards the Port
of Soller can be seen from here and there are any number of
pathways leading out across the olive terraces that the goat herders
use. Once the terraces end (they go on for a surprisingly long way)
the scent of the pine trees is pungent. Watch your footing, bring
plenty of water (especially in the summer) and be sure to get down
before the light fails. We have put together a nice collection of
photographs
taken on this walk.
