Es Cantonet - Vegetarian Restaurant in Palma de Mallorca
Tucked away on a side street just a stones throw away from Plaza
de Espagne in Palma is the vegetarian restaurant Es Cantonet. They
serve a healthy selection of wholesome food cooked using in season
local ingredients in a homely none smoking environment.
You make a selection from the three options for each course on
the menu of the day. Sliced brown bread and some excellent green
olives were served while I chose. For the entree I began with an
Apple and Potato salad with sliced red cabbage and a delicious Mayonnaise
source served on a bed of fresh lettuce. This wet my appetite and
I was looking forward to the rest of the meal.
To
drink I chose the Binifaldo mineral water, bottled locally at Lluc
in the Sierra da Tramuntana. Bier and Mallorcan Organic wine were
also available.
For the second course I chose a Mallorcan soup which was very thick
but as I was hungry, this I felt was a bonus. It contained a lot
of green cabbage, cauliflower, onions and juices full of flavour.
The main course , some kind of Quiche made with Egg, Mushrooms,
Leak and topped with sliced Tomatoes and Mozzarella (both slightly
browned) was next. The pastry was crispy containing cereals (seeds).
At this stage I was well fed and the Dessert was pure luxury. Moist
Chocolate Tart enriched with grated Walnuts and coated in fresh
Creme.
I
was also offered Coffee or an Infusion which I skipped as my train
was due.
After the meal I felt thoroughly refreshed and invigorated; an
indication that the ingredients were high quality and untarnished
by chemical fertilizers and pesticide's. My only complaint is that
the food was cooling down slightly when it arrived at the table.
For the money (11.90 Euros or 13.90 in the evenings), considering
the size of the meal, the quality of the ingredients and the flavour
of the food I was thoughroughly impressed and would give Es Cantonet
a score of 9/10.
Es Cantonet is a small locals restaurant. English is not spoken
and there were no tourist menus there. As long as you can read the
menu and order in Spanish or some form of Latinesque this is a great
place to get a taste of the real Palma de Mallorca.
